But what is New Orleans known for:
Another year has passed and this year we will spend Christmas in the U.S. Who thinks it is cheesy and colorful is wrong. It remains traditional with pyramid, classic Christmas ornaments, traditional Christmas cake “Stolle” and the goose on Christmas eve! The absolute highlight this year is the Christmas tree – what a perfect tree! However, we have learned that the “Holiday Season” begins early and you should hurry up accordingly to get a tree, because otherwise you have only the choice between large or needles falling like rain drops. The goose was a project – you can get anything but a well-grown grass fed or organic goose? It worked but one had to deviate from current lifestyle behaviors. Such is life in another country, always exciting! Thus, Merry Christmas and all the best for 2013. Conclusion of Las Vegas: One has to go there, definitely enjoying the bustle of a vibrant street. If who want to enjoy great food and see some great shows Las Vegas is the place to go. The gambling halls is something one gets used to. Wo für ist New Orleans bekannt: The conclusion of the trip: as long as one walk in non-touristy areas, is willing to walk a lot, can stand the sweet smell of garbage, can stand the humidity and does a taxi ride with Ms Carol from United Cabs New Orleans is a great destination to explore.
With a great job back in Germany, in 2011 I decided to follow my husband to the US. You know, there are people seeking for a sabbatical or break and they immediately know what to do with the amount of leisure time available. But there are also people like me who fall in a deep whole and don’t know what to do with their time from the very beginning. I don’t have to point out that I cried a river at that time, the winter ahead of us, nothing really to take care about (I am not talking about doing laundry or cooking dinner) and in times of economic challenges job opportunities weren’t available at all. But when spring came along I started to think about my opportunities I have while I am here. And yes, thanks to my hubby and the will to challenge my brain again I started something new. Since June 2012 I am back to school. Being a student in one’s mid thirties feels weird and it is a challenge, especially to study in a foreign language and also again to learn how to study. But since then I work from one course to the other and hopefully next spring (2014) I will finish with a MBA in Social Media Marketing, yeah. The absolute positive about an online program is that one can have access whenever and wherever. This provides me the opportunity to travel while I have to work on assignments. As you can see on the number of posts tagged with travel – I travel a lot. If not now, then when? Food deutsche casino careers, oh boy – of course you have everything from stomach pain creating fast food free roulette on bodog, to typical tourist crap and fine cuisine. A neighbor of ours recommended “Couchon ” and we were lucky to get a table on a Friday evening. French influenced cuisine but very local and very delicious. One only should know that a boudin (French blood sausage) looks different but the taste is similar to what I know from France. On Saturday morning we had breakfast at “New Orleans Cake Cafe & Bakery “, a very busy place with great local dishes. We liked it so much that we came back on Sunday for lunch. Away from the tourist area this place is very unique and only open till 3pm. Oh yes and then there is this constant fight among Acme Oyster House and Felix’s Restaurant & Oyster Bar. Both places are known for seafood and I don’t know why but the queue at Acme was much longer. However, based on recommendation by locals we decided for Felix and yes, we were not disappointed. The oysters were great, when you sit at the bar you may be served your oysters right away but please do not expect them to be served on a plate. The gumbo (local traditional dish) but also the fried softshell crabs and calamaris were very yummy. Of course one has to keep in mind that most of the dishes are fried.
Yes, at some point our neighbors noticed that we are crazy travelers and are keen to see as many places as possible while in the US. Of course we got lots of recommendations for places to discover and while we had already seen many place in the north, east and west the south and southwest remained untouched. As our time in the US came to an end we decided that the grand finale should be with a trip to the south, southwest and topped with a wedding in Silverthorne, CO. So our trip started in New Orleans. I am not a big fan of warm weather or humidity, so you can imagine what a challenge the NOLA weather became…Already in our decent to NOLA we noticed that it’s going to be an interesting time – thunder, rain and sunshine in between. The ride with the taxi is 33$ including increased heartbeat (OMG I still wonder what the definition of safety and technically well functioning car is). As usual we booked a place at AirBnB, this time at Shiros; a lovely place in walking distance to the French quarter and far way to hide from the tourists and activities. French Quarter is the main tourist attraction and the famous Bourbon Street reminds me of Hamburg’s Reeperbahn, the only difference is that people in NOLA already drink early in the morning, walk around with their fancy plastic glasses and it smells of a mix of garbage and alcohol all the time // disgusting but people didn’t seem to be bothered.
Within two days we walked French Quarter, Treme and Marigny. On Sunday we rented a bike for three hour s and biked up and through the city park to the shore of lake Pontchartrain. It was nice to enjoy a slight breeze and also to see the nice villas along Esplanade Ave. Usually this does not catch my attention but the cemetery close to the park was stunning.
While in Germany, the technology is taking over human labor, in the U.S. it is still very much appreciated. In German construction areas traffic lights regulate the stop and go, here someone is holding the the stop sign on the street, waiting for instructions … As long as it’s not raining and the sun is not too hot it seems a great place to work. Only stupid when one is the first in the queue and can not escape the eyes off … Bis bald mal irgendwo, Eure mykatjesworld Music, a number of clubs along Frenchmen Street but also a great variety of music styles and levels of street musicians. The two ladies, Tanya and Dorise. were awesome. On YouTube I found a number of videos, so they seem to be around since a while and in a way it’s a pitty that they did not become professional musicians but on the other hand in the way they do it they are able to keep their personal style. So I hope you will further enjoy and also share my reviews of my daily and overall adventures in the land of opportunities. Even though some time has gone by since our trip to California with final stop in Las Vegas I did not forget to blog about it.
